I can’t believe they still would run a Gilchrist Sunday strip after the new — and much better — writer/artist took over. (I was really hoping to see Olivia’s first Sunday effort.) Making it even worse, the Gilchrist strip includes another painfully annoying country music reference, just to remind us why we should be glad he’s gone. Ugh.
What a disappointing reversion. Look at for instance Nancy’s legs in Panel 2, or her arms in Panel 5 – for someone lauded in the comments as a better artist his sense of proportion is abominable.
And, of course, Fritzi’s bizarrely-proportioned head, lifeless characterisation, and spray-painted (or possibly rubber) T-shirt with the badly lettered tribute to some obscure musician* across her breasts could not be better timed evidence considering yesterday’s discussion of how Gilchrist had perverted the character.
I, too, wonder about all the hatred towards Gilchrist.
I’m no fan of country music, either, nor did I enjoy Oona and those weird storylines…but I didn’t have any problem with his artwork or characterizations.
And why did everyone wait until a new artist took over to start complaining about the previous one? That doesn’t accomplish anything at all.
There has been a lot of discussion of Olivia’s style being closer to Ernie Bushmiller’s because it is so simple. As I look at this I find it pretty uncomplicated, but much less stark and empty than Olivia’s. As such I would argue that this style is closer to Ernie’s.
“Well, thats how it goesAnd GuyI know you’re gettin’Anxious to closeAnd thanks for the cheerI hope you didn’t mindMy bending your earBut this torch that I’ve foundIt’s gotta be drownedOr it soon might explodeSo make it one for my babyAnd one more for the road…”
I think one of the stark contrasts between Guy’s work and Olivia’s is the backgrounds. Guy populated the panel with flowers, grass, leaves on trees, etc. Olivia’s backgrounds so far have been pretty much non-existent. No judgement here, just observation.
I really like Gilchrist. He used the whole area, the drawings look more realistic. And the little items like the shirt add depth to the character. It isn’t up to every reader to understand what the shirt means, but it tells us that Fritzi likes music. We see the characters as real people, and not just a means to tell a quick pun.
As a fan of Guy’s since he drew the Muppets comic strip back in the 70s, I enjoyed seeing one last retro Sunday strip of his. As a fan of Country Music, and the AMC awards coming up soon, I thought the T shirt tribute to be an appropriate tie in. I await Olivia’s rendition of Fritzi…and hope she changes her inker/colorist…Sluggo looks puke bile green in her early efforts.
Finally! A decent comic. Not impressed with the new artist. I take that back…she wouldn’t be all that bad if she changed the name of the strip to “Olivia” and quit drawing Nancy, et al.
What are you people talking about? This comic is god-awful. It has nothing to do with Nancy and everything to do with the over-articulated tripe that Gilchrist tries to pass off as a comic strip. Nancy is not a Muppet Baby and should not be drawn as one. Aunt Fritzi looks like she was drawn by Al Capp even though he has been dead for 39 years. I thought this nightmare was over but apparently we have to endure the Thomas Kinkade loves saccharine style a while longer. I already miss OJ.
“I MUST call and get the oil changed/change our phone provider/see when my dentist appointment is/schedule a haircut/the plumber to fix the water heater…” her expression in that last panel says any number of dull things other than what she’s actually saying.

Everybody sing:
Three rocks in the title
Which one will the readers miss
Drawn by three hopeful artists
Which one makes the readers pissed?

It’s not the destination, Fritzi, it’s the journey.

Nancy is still in Sunday Guy Gilchrist reruns? I thought there would be new Sunday Nancy strips with new artist Olivia Jaimes by now!

Hate this new artist. I’ll give it a couple more days but if it doesn’t improve, I’m outta here.

People HATED Gilchrist? That’s new to me. So they didn’t like his artwork, or did they just not like him because he was a professing Christian?
