The copyright says 1935 but I was about Skippy’s age in 1945 and movies were 12¢. Maybe that was just the matinees with cartoons and serials.
After a time, cartoonists trusted the readers to guess who the offstage character was. We don’t generally see little arrows pointing toward balloons anymore to identify the speaker.
