Kind of felt like this during the recent NOVA program on mathematics and its applications. If you went by this program, you’d think that STEM professionals are 60% women, 25% black, and usually young and glamorous with possible careers as models or musicians. But they did have one shot of actual engineers at work, a large roomful working on the landing of a Mars probe, and they were all white or Asian men. They couldn’t cherry-pick that one to fit the message. (And I certainly want the field to be more reflective of the general society, an admirable goal; but it’s not that way now, sorry to say.)
