The only sport that has more low-lifes and cheating than baseball has got to be the players in the National Felons League.

No guaranteed contracts and a couple of hundred colleges graduating 1/4 of their rosters means lots of competition for the jobs, ie hitting the other guy.

The hardest thing for an official – in any sport – is to measure intent. Did this person intentionally foul his/her opponent ? Was the contact accidental or malicious ?

These decisions have to be rendered in split second decisions by the official on the spot – who hopefully, actually witnessed the occurance from an unobstructed vantage point.

The rules are there in black and white but must be instantly interpreted by a fallible human arbitrator.

It would be easiest to eliminate the word “intentional”. This would be a sea change for the sport of course – you would effectively need to close the record books and start over, like they failed to do in baseball due to the hopeful reduction in drugs. And we would have the offense attempt to create helmet contact on purpose. Not sure what should be done.

Use the honor system and have the players call their own concussions!

What difference does intent make? Penalize the foul, regardless of whether it was intentional or unintentional.
