This reminds me of a letter to Ann Landers a while back: Guy plans elaborate proposal for News Year’s Eve. Girlfriend’s friend takes him aside and tells him Girl is out of here if she doesn’t get a ring for Christmas. Now he can change all his plans and the girl will always think it was because she gave him an ultimatum, or he can wait and see if she follows through with her threat. I always wondered what he chose!
