The punchline could probably been phrased better, like: “Yes, I know the government is depending on us to deflect the asteroid. The coach still wants his blackboard back, though.”
The government? Is he talking about the same government we have right now which doesn’t believe in science? Perhaps this scene takes place sometime during the last administration when they actually believed in scientific facts.

If there’s not a good reason to change it, old terminology will hang on. I mean, how many phones are out there where you can truly “dial” a number?
