There are high schools out there that are focused on athletics. I know in Utah there is at least one school for winter athletes and I have read about such schools in VT and MI. Not to mention all the private schools where basketball and football stars will travel from around the country just to play on better teams and against better competition. Obviously these students still take normal classes, but schools such as the one in Utah have more flexibility so that the students can compete on the international level, which involves weeks of travel at a time.
