I always find these heart-to-heart talks between sensitive little boy Binkley & his Dad very sweet. As totally non-alike as they are, they have a great relationship.
When I was a middle school teacher I was profoundly disturbed by the inability of many of my colleagues to tell the difference between self esteem and self respect. (See TIMBOB2313’s comment above.) Social promotion was the norm and I was ostracized by many of my colleagues for not grading on a curve. I would get a blank stare when I would say something like “What good will it do for their self esteem when they graduate high school semi-literate and are doomed to dead end jobs for the rest of their lives?” at teacher’s meetings. Oh, well. McDonalds will always need employees.
People trying things out from other cultures, and perhaps adopting things that fit, is a huge part of what makes the U.S. a great place to live. The notion that people are “stealing” something from another culture is absurd!

The cultural appropriation thing is insane. You can’t wear clothes from other cultures or make their food and soon won’t be allowed to eat it!!!
