Before my knee went South, I used to run 5 miles a day. One day I measured my weight before and after the run. I figured that the weight loss was due to water and calculated the fraction of a gallon I burned off. I divided that into the 5 miles and computed that I get 16.4 miles to the gallon: about as efficient as an SUV.
Speaking of gas mileage: have you ever noticed that gasoline at the pump is measured to one one-thousandth of a gallon? I worked for a gas pump company once and I still don’t know why. One one-thousandth of a gallon is a fraction of a teaspoon. At 16.4 mpg, it is enough to get your OPEC-mobile about 72 feet: enough to make it to the next gas pump.
Never give an engineer a calculator and some numbers or this kind of thing happens.
