    Not always. A lot of math problems neither require nor benefit from the use of calculators and computers. Math is about how to arrange the X, Y, Z, etc., to figure out what you’re going to have to do when you get out the calculator.

    Last year I gave a high-school math test on logarithms. The most complex calculation required was on the order of 1+1=2, but every kid in the classroom had his/her calculator out and was pounding the keys like mad. I have no idea what they were doing. Lucky charm, maybe?

    puddleglum: There is no Algebra in real-life.

    And I stopped caring when they started using letters instead of numbers.

    I mean, once you get past batting averages and ERAs, what does it matter?

    I would disagree mightly with you huskiecoach. Try this on for size (standard ratio problem that I use for my model railroad HO scale [1 unit scale = 87 units actual]):

    where 1 in actual = 87 scale inches, how many actual inches is 100 scale inches

    87x = 1(100)

    x = 100/87

    x = 1.15 (approx.)
