I am disappointed that Sluggo is still so bound by representation. I hoped that his natural inclination towards genuine expression would lead him past the constraints and expectations of Art Coach and the class. Perhaps his portrait is more conceptual than I give him credit for. Maybe he is saying, “You see me as a cartoon. I’ll draw myself as the self you project upon me.” The baseball cap in place of a flat cap is the “glitch” that lets you know that he, like Nancy, believes his true self is more “modern” than the commenters on GoComics want to acknowledge.
A couple of things. First, it’s interesting that the “nice” twin (panel 3) is the one of the 4 with the most accurate self portrait. Second, note that the expression used with the mouths in each of the portraits do not reflect their actual mouth expression in the panel (assuming that Nancy is frowning in the last panel, but we can’t see it LOL).

It doesn’t have to be that accurate, Nancy…

Lucy’s the twin with her hair up, yeah?

It’s always easier when you don’t have to sketch in the hair.

What Olivia is trying to say is “I do this EVERY DAY! I did NOT choose the easiest job in cartooning!”

I think Lucy is even more talented than Olivia.

I always liked the term one reader used for Nancy’s hair: Prickles!

Well, it’s pretty clear who has the most chops here.

That afternoon, Nancy discarded her nascent aspirations to be a photorealist.
