I learned long ago to wrap the lights around a piece of cardboard. The real pain is finding the burned out bulb(s) that are keeping it (or a section) from working.
We played that game every year until the price of twinkle lights came down to a few $ per strand. Then we just threw them out. But along came the expensive LEDs…

Bought a pre wired tree with LEDs problem solved.
