^^ The diplomats? Sure, although a tad gossipy. ;-) I’m just wondering why on earth so many in the US seem hellbent on nailing Assange. Not just nailing him but wanting worse.

^ I don’t think Openleaks wants to be “providing” news at all although it will report on what it has passed on once it is published elsewhere. The main difference lies in that openleaks will simply be the go-between, between whistle-blower and an outlet that will be interested in publishing (and verifying) what is being whistle-blown. It won’t be accepting any documentaion itself but will facilitate & enable that publisher receiving the documentation safely & securely. It then avoids the situation Wikileaks is in right now: an actual target beause it is in possession of that sensitive data. The other difference is that it claims it will be more transparent than Wikileaks which, oddly enough, claims is all about transparency too. It would seem Assange had some difference of opinion within his organisation.

@ fennec: It actually reinvidicates a few countries’ actions, now leading to conspiracy claims ( @@ ) because it doesn’t quite embarrass them while laying open the hypocrisy of a few others as well, not only the USA’s. To me what the cable leaks has done is simply reveal to a broader group of folks what realpolitik is about (I know, I bang on about it all the time). I’m also hoping more is revealed on how corporate business is conducted in many remote corners of the world. Folks here tend to be partisan & idealogues when most of the world is pragmatic and less attached to idealism. It is more base than that. The sooner people realise this, the sooner there’ll be real understanding, compromise and actual progress. Instead we have a public who is painted a rosy picture to look at while it is business as usual behind the scenes. Perhaps we will get more altruism in this world rather than propaganda.

The people who want to avenge themselves on Assange & Wikileaks seem to have had their national pride feathers ruffled. Pfft, patriotism & nationalism, always easy buttons to push.

^ You left one major component out.

Publishing classified documents can be considered espionage. Now, they do have a potential problem prosecuting Assange for that given that the mainstream media has also published details of these documents, after the fact.

The people who are starting OpenLeaks are former Wikileaks peopel who didn’t like to see Assange hog all the spotlight.

…and we need more leak sites so they can’t ALL be closed at once!

I’ve seen a documentary about J Edgar Hoover yesterday night. I wonder what he would do with Wikileaks…and what the public opinion would do with him.

I think it all just shows that the US should have had better security. Also the leaks are not as bad as some people think.
