Haven’t watched t.v. in years. If it comes on the radio, I change the channels till I find music. Only time I see any news is when a newspaper headline catches my eye. And usually the only part I actually read is the photo caption. Blissfully ignoring the worlds problems since 2010!
You can’t hide from the news and still be an actual member of a society. On the other hand, TV news is the worst possible source – well other than most internet sites. Always use multiple sources, ideally from more than one country.
My favorite Calvin and Hobbes strip goes something like this: Calvin: “I’ve decided not to think about anything bad. If anything makes me upset I’ll just ignore it.” Hobbes: “Don’t you think that’s a pretty irresponsible way to live?” Calvin: “What a pretty afternoon.”
Not reading/watching the news doesn’t leave you ignorant; and that’s not new:Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle….The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day. . . . I will add, that the man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors. He who reads nothing will still learn the great facts, and the details are all false.- Thomas Jefferson (letter to John Novell, June 11, 1807)

If she’d thought of it years ago, she would have prevented TV from even being invented….

TV news is like the sign at the airport that warns of low-flying planes. There’s not much you can do about it.
