I spent 22 of my 45 years of working in a grocery store, so I am always checking dates. I even sometimes revert to facing some of the items making it easier for shorter people reach higher shelves. Old Habit!!
Again, Millennials, those aren’t expiration dates — they’re sell by dates. You still want to get the latest date possible, if you think you’ll have it in the refrigerator very long (like I do), but that 1 day past jug would still be good for 3 or 4 days at least.
