I suspect the noise from a vacuum is physically painful to dogs.

We have two cats—a Bombay named Oscar and a Calico named Molly. Molly is petrified by the vacuum and flees to a good hiding place. But Oscar’s response is the very opposite. You could hold a running vacuum over his head and he would not flinch or budge. Oscar was a rescue from a shelter and they estimate he had been feral for a minimum of two years although it could very well have been longer. He would have endured all kinds of things on the streets—nothing phases him including thunder claps. The only times he runs like crazy is meal time and for treats. Molly on the other hand is an escape artist.

This would have been a great bonding opportunity between Scratch and the boys. Cats hate vacuums, too.

Our Angel would bark if I even opened the door to the closet the vacuum cleaner was in.
