whenever there was a disagreement, before the instant access to the ‘net, on something, say … ’how many home runs did such and such hit in his career?’…
then, if both sides are adamant that they are right, bet 10 or 20 bucks on it. it’s the sure way of tabling the argument until it is researched.
it was agreed that if one party refuses to bet , then they should just shut up about arguing,
because if you’re sure you’re right, then you’d make the bet.
We used encyclopedias. And almanacs, and atlases, and other reference books. The mark of a smart and informed person was knowing how to look things up in the library.
