20 seconds of warm-up skating, turn your back to the audience and start your routine.

I never would have guessed Snoopy would be hit by stage fright? HE always seemed pretty outgoing and charismatic to me. At least, a lot of his personas seem to be.

I just skated in our club’s Christmas show a week ago. Shows are not as nerve busting. The audience wants to have a good time; most are lay people who don’t know a toe loop from a lutz and whatever you do, it will look good to them. Just ham it up and smile and you’ll be a hit. Now, competition is a different ballgame….

Bugs Bunny : Listen, Dracula… Have you ever had the feeling you were being watched? Like the eyes of strange things are upon you?

Bugs Bunny : [Bug then starts speaking, extra slowly and almost whispers] Look, out there, in the audience.

    Gossamer : PEEEE-PLE! Aieeeeeeee!

[Gossamer then runs away through the laboratory walls screaming]

I had the normal terror of speaking in front of people. But I had a chance for a plum duty as a military instructor and wanted to do that. I had to take the 6 week course and like most service schools, it is to the point and no nonsense. I forced myself to act like an idiot and talk to empty rooms and a room full of people. Now, I have no problems speaking in front of groups.

In public speaking class they recommend several things to help you get over stage fright.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I want to let you know that I’ve prepared intensively for tonight’s speech. I’ve done my part. Now if you will do yours and try to look like my bathroom mirror.”

Actually, practice makes perfect. I’ve made a fool of myself in front of a crowd so often in my life that it no longer bothers me.

Any actor will tell you a little stage fright is a good thing. Keeps you sharp.
