While the St. Bernard and the neck cask are a well known “trope” (tvtropes.org), St. Bernards are great rescue animals. As in, they rescue others. My brother’s (now late) St. Bernard used to play with the kids by pulling them out of the snow by their pant legs because she thought their “snow angel” making sessions were times they had fallen and couldn’t get up. And when my mom fell into a snow bank, the dog came and was trying to pull her out (my mom wasn’t stuck); they really miss that dog. ;-)
