Actually, the idea harkens back to the old days of european royalty and the antebellum South where a peasant or slave child was assigned to the royal or master’s child, and whose main duty was to provide “companionship” for the ‘superior’ child and also serve to take any punishment the ‘superior’ child might merit. This is how the term “whipping boy” entered the lexicon.
