I sympathize with how hard it is to do “BION” now. When it started, there was no internet, and no way for encyclopedias to have all this info. I don’t envy the Ripley people now who have to compete with Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, and the rest of the internet.
The fact that the comic continues testifies to its resiliency.
and the last verse used to be sung back then as well: O thus be it ever, when freemen shall standBetween their loved homes and the war’s desolation.Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued landPraise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!46
The goal, in order to collect the Orteig Prize ($25K) was to fly non-stop between New York and Paris (3,600 miles). It did not matter if there were more than one person or what type of airplane was used. There was a previous flight that had been flown from Newfoundland to Ireland that was about half the distance. There were 9 attempts to make the NY-Paris flight and 6 persons lost their lives in those attempts including Charles Nungesser and François Coli.

I have a 1957 hard cover from Ripley’s. It doesn’t sat “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” on the cover, it says “Wonder Book of Strange Facts”.
