You know, as a woman, I’m in constant danger of rape. It is never my style to dress like a hooker (like it seems to be for a lot of women these days), but it doesn’t matter. The threat is real all the time. Now, most men aren’t rapists, but just enough are to make me be hyper-vigilant when I’m out of the house, and at least aware when I’m at home alone.
Cops aren’t all racists, but enough are that an encounter between a cop and an African-styled American holds the potential of violence against the black, just as any encounter with a strange man holds all the potential for me getting raped. The difference is that if a guy attacks me, I can fight like hell, even kill him if necessary, to not get raped. But if a black, unjustly arrested by a racist cop, fights like hell, he/she will likely get tased multiple times, at the very least, and shot to death at the very most. Most likely, he won’t get away, at least not for long. Fighting at the point of contact seems like a (pun intended) dead end. Mom seems to know this.
Did anyone notice that what her son noticed about her statement wasn’t what she actually said? The first thing he quoted was “if all we do is fight”, when what she said was “if all we EVER do is fight”. Notice how that changes the whole dynamic of the statement? His next observation was that “then all we ARE is soldiers” when she actually said “then all we CAN BE is soldiers”.
It’s hard to believe kids don’t see the differences.

Someone left that on our men’s room wall. I labeled it Rhea Lice and left it.

When momma tells you to shut up, do you hear her?

I get the point, but maybe you need some soldiers. Or is that just my white privilege talking?
