This is Martha’s perpetual problem with Michael going back to his 13th birthday party. She wants to dance and apparently all Michael wants to do is eat and drink. Regardless, we hit a whole lot of plot points with this one. Martha reveals that the other guy that Martha was seeing for the last 10 months was Lawrence. Not only that but she has revealed that her interest in Lawrence was merely a 10-month-long ploy to get Michael’s interest. That’s a lot of time to devote to a passive-aggressive scheme which was clearly not working. Martha has gone for full-up aggressive and as Michael thinks in the last panel, “It’s working.” She has asked him to dance and had made the physical move on Michael twice now. Michael is too easily distracted by food for any kind of passive-aggression to work on him.
Perhaps it’s best that he simply focuses on eating….maybe he isn’t ready for a stronger relationship with any girl. Martha should just play the field for a while; that said, it’s in women’s nature to crave a stronger relationship and settle down.
Lynn’s Comments:I’ve shown the kids ballroom dancing, which was what we did…we had to learn how! It was part of our gym class curriculum. Ballroom dancing allowed us to lean close together, to allow one person to lead the other, to feel motion, rhythm, pattern and style. Things have changed. People don’t ballroom dance anymore, but I’m guessing it will become such a novelty that young people will see how romantic it is and bring it all back. YES!!! …But first, they’ll have to come up with some danceable tunes.
Is Lawrence not walking back to the dance after taking Allyson home? Micheal is just being used at the moment so Martha does not have to sit the last dance out. Still.. young men will take what ever opportunity drops in their laps.
Uh, I have a funny feling you and martha will end up together with children of your own…maybe because I Have read this strip for many years….the second cycle is pretty dang good too.

Life is complicated. Love multiplies the complication with multi-lies. Go with it.

I wonder if “Save the Last dance For me” by the Drifters is playing in the background?

This brings to mind a great Righteous Brothers song from the 60s called “Stand by”.

Ah the confusing rush of adolescent hormones. While we all would like to return to our youth would any of us want to go through that again?

Was “Earth Angel” the critical song for their relationship, or was that Allyson and Gordon? Some teenager’s picture depends on it!
