Dad waited patiently until I ran out of steam, then proceeded to paddle my backside, in public, in front of all of the other shoppers.
The other parents applauded. Sort of grateful that they didn’t ask for a encore.
It was definitely different 56 years ago.
And yes, I never did it again. Under the right circumstances, applied properly, corporal punishment works. At least it did for a very surprised 5 year old.
