Awe, sometimes it really sucks to have a Birthday during the Holidays.

    Good Morning, Fellow Cave Dwellers!

Part of my grandson’s Christmas excitement/anticipation is that his birthday is in nearby January.

Having a Christmastime birthday has pluses as well as minuses. Mine’s December 31. I never experienced the scenario described by Teresa above; rather, if there was something I wanted that was too expensive for either a Christmas present or a birthday present, I’d say “It can be for both.” Also, my brother and sister (both older) had summer birthdays, and from about 4-8 I had “half-birthday” celebrations in June so I wouldn’t feel left out. This also gave me an opportunity to ask for presents that were appropriate in the summer rather than winter (maybe SOME kids could keep their mind on baseball gloves or skateboards when there’s a foot of snow on the ground, but I wasn’t one of them). Neither my June nor December commemoration would be a full-on event, but combined they totalled rather more than 100% of a standard BPU (Birthday Party Unit).

As an adult, though, people overlook it far more often. SInce my birthday is New Year’s Eve, there’s always a party but it’s never for me; if I’m at some event and a couple of people say “Oh yeah, it’s you birthday too, isn’t it? Happy Birthday!”, I’m satisfied. It’s as much as I expect and, nowadays, as much as I need. Still, it’s kinda disheartening when everyone counts down the seconds until my birthday is over…

There have been times where I have felt like Wolfie. People have completely forgetten my birthday. (And no, I was not happy about it.) So, I can understand his unhappiness when people didn’t remember. But his owner remembering made it almost all better.

    THANK YOU!!

This one made my day because it’s my birthday today, and it’s a terrible day to have a birthday. There’s the post-Christmas letdown, everyone is too tired to do anything, nobody wants to eat or cook a special dinner (I had several Christmas-leftover Birthday dinners as a child) and my gift is usually something that should have been part of Christmas, but was separated so that I could have a birthday present. As an adult, it’s better because I take the day off from doing anything and my kids are occupied with their toys, but a lot of times restaurants aren’t open. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent about my special day and thank you to Mastroianni and Hart for this fantastic comic!!

    Happy Birthday Wolfie!!

My wife’s birthday is July 4th and she hates hot weather. One Fourth of July when it was in the 90’s, she said she wish it would be cold and a freak hail storm happened and the temp dropped to the 50’s for the rest of the day.

    Happy Birthday, Lightenup.

Fritz, love your family’s solution to the holiday birthday.

One of our friends’ birthday is on New Years day. He has gotten really tired of race horse references.

I have a neighbour who was born on January 1. So was her brother, and so was her son!

Not much to celebrate mid-year in that family!

I was born on the morning of the 31st, so I was closer to 12/30 than 1/1, but my dad still got to declare me for the entire year on his taxes.

Still, I was a bit early. Not premature, but…prompt. My brother and sister had both come well after their due dates, so my mom was convinced I was false labor. SURPRISE! I was in a hurry to get out of there…

Mine is on the 30th and I pretty much got “this is for your birthday and Christmas” on Christmas day. Occasionally, like Fritskringle, I got something bigger for both days. At least I always got the cake and ice cream on my birthday though.

    BEST EVER!!

When you see Wolfie in the 1st panel on a Sunday piece, you know you’re in for a treat! This one just happens to take us through a range of emotions including, but not limited to, joy, hope, optimism, patience, reflection, disbelief leading, finally, to dispair. Fortunately, that is quickly replaced by surprise and elation.

    Wolfie is simply the greatest!!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Years, Everyone!

Just got invited to a 1/1/11 birthday for a dear friend who may be celebrating one of the later “round” birthdays. This is what they call it in the U.K. She’s throwing herself the party and while we’re in the U.S., I like this U.K. tradition of taking charge and making your own party day special for your friends.

He should have gotten the tree too… something to eat, something to pee on and ornaments to play with.
