I think this is funny but nowadays it would be considered some form of physical abuse. And you surely could not show a boy hitting a girl! There would be an uproar by the easily-offended.
This strip made me think of a Garrison Keillor column in which he wrote about what strikes us as funny—and not. Playing old Laurel and Hardy films for what he thought would be the delight of his 7-year-old daughter, she winced every time Ollie hit Stan with something. When Stan was whacked in the head with a frying pan his daughter winced again, turned to her father and said: “Not Funny!”
