“That’s the way it goes” seems to be his catch phrase at this point in the strip. I don’t recall it from the later Peanuts that I grew up with, but maybe I’ve just forgotten.

I have the opposite problem — instead of a pal leaving me for a girl, my girl usually leaves me for a pal.
