Our “sandlot” for baseball was the only vacant lot left in our neighborhood, across the street and one lot over from my house. It even had a fence running along the back that conveniently belonged to the property of one of my best friends, so we could easily retrieve home runs without being told to “Get off my lawn you darn kids!”
Sadly, the storm drain was right across the street (behind “home plate”) and we lost many baseballs in it until we figured out that my skateboard, turned on its side, perfectly covered the gap…PLAY BALL!
