If you have to “lick” a lot of stamps and envelopes, you can keep a small damp sponge by your writing desk. There are special ones you can buy, or you can improvise your own.

The dirt from his hand could only make the stamp glue taste better. That stuff is NASTY! I prefer to build up a lot of saliva in my mouth and then force it out on my lips to swipe the stamp through that so I don’t have to lick the stamp. I’m never near a sink or something where I could get a damp cloth, rag, paper towel, or sponge to wipe the stamp on when I actually need o use a stamp.
