If the comic strip and the movie were in sync, the reason for the asexual attitude is mammy’s elixir which makes a boy/man into a hunk, but strips him of any sexual desire. Of course, if this is 21st century version, gay would certainly be a consideration.
Somewhere in the distant past, didn’t Abner fall in love with the expression on a girl’s knee? I think it was Moonbeam McSwine. I won’t spoil how that was resolved, but to my 12-year-old mind, it was a big relief. (I now have a 13-year-old mind…I’ve matured slowly.)
