Originally werewolves could change at any time depending on the type of abilities known. “The Howling” had it right. Though they added the silver as their weak point. Wounding from silver a werewolf could not heal. Regular weapons if they die from it is temporary. 3 days later they rise from the dead fully healed regardless of the mortal blow. However fire too is harder for them to regenerate from. They are otherwise immortal.
Curt Siodmak gave us the changing at full moon, silver can kill werewolves, nearly immortal and also added that pentagrams are on their bodies whether on the palms or chest.
Even a man who is pure in heart,And says his prayers by nightMay become a Wolf when the Wolfbane bloomsAnd the autumn Moon is bright
(The last line was changed in the sequels to “And the Moon is full and bright”.)
