Puritans screw up everything. I’m sure that he considered holidays frivolous. I can talk, because they’re my people. From that viewpoint, Christmas & lent are Papist diversions from the true way. Most American Easter traditions would be Druid Satanism.
@Chuklitl: nope, American Easter traditions are pagan in origin. Fertility rites, and such. BTW, the Druids did not believe in Satan, which/who is an invention of the Catholics, who came along a lot later than the Druids. Therefore, there is no such thing as Druid Satanism.
I thought “Satan” was derived and co-opted from the Hebrew “accuser” who somehow evolved from the role of celestial prosecutor to becoming the number one buyer and seller of new and gently-used souls.
Puritans would gamely point out that all idol worship is Satanic in origin since he predates all of it by a few eons. Satan means “the accuser”. Also Ba’al, Lucifer, various incarnations. Favorite: the dragon since most of our love of rites and procedures over actual relationships derives from the reptilian part of our brain.
Druids had a devil of sorts: Saman or any number of other spellings. So stricitly speaking your wrong about it, Bib.
Wild: you been reading up on Daniel Webster again. :-) And the notion that Satan needs to buy souls he already owns comes from another Catholic mistake about infant christening as salvation.
Thanks Pab, that was enough of the druids etc, even though I’m a Medievalist (and was told this week that I’m “obsessed”) because I decided I love my hand made turned shoes and plan to make at least one or 2 more pairs.
Thanks for the informative posts, everyone. I stand corrected. But, would anyone mind if I sit down, now?
Seriously, I’m grateful to anyone who can add to the knowledge base, and keep me from passing on faulty information. As a librarian, I need to make sure that the info I provide is correct.
