Every so often — every year, I’m guessing, multiplied by however many bars and taverns supposedly frequented in Key West — there is a big Ernest Hemingway lookalike contest. And just as de rigueur as the beard, hair and scowl is the bulky fisherman’s sweater famously worn in the iconic portrait by Yousuf Karsh. And every time I see photos from any such contest, I think of how incongruous that sweater seems in Key West.
Hemingway lived all over, not just in Key West. You can easily picture that sweater on him when he lived in Idaho, or when he was in Northern Michigan. Maybe. I’ve lived in kinda sorta Northern Michigan, and that sweater seems a bit much. Surely we can assume he didn’t dress like that in Key West. And he didn’t.
I checked, and Karsh took that photo in … Cuba. Havana. Once more, I learn something and end up knowing less.

I take it that this is not his choosing of sweater. This is his mom being mom.

Maybe it was for his home in Idaho, where he killed himself?

I have wanted a “Hemingway” sweater of that ilk, myself. :)

After scrolling through many, many images I found just one picture of Hemingway wearing that type of sweater.
