No apology necessary. If you’re telling me a white person can’t dress/pretend he’s one of his heroes just because the hero is black, then you are the racist.

IMHO there are ten different “A” levels of cultural crossings (IMHO):

Abhorrence – hating

Antagonize – through mocking or ridicule (see blackface)

Acrimony – unease or fear of

Avoidance – segregation, “out of sight”

Agnosticism – not knowing anything about either way

Acknowledgement – that it exists

Acceptance* – permitting it into a persons’ world view

Appreciation* – enjoying the diversity

Admiration* – of aspects that improve upon original view

Appropriation – claiming of aspects into other cultures, in defiance of origin

The trick is to improve cultural crossings into the starred levels, without going too far and ending up in Appropriation. Too often these days what is really Appreciation or Admiration is misconstrued as Appropriation, and there is a real difference.

This comic clearly shows Steve has Admiration of MJ. There’s no need for apology, I feel.

As a slightly deranged but proud white male who often sings Nickelback songs in the bathroom I find this culturally insensitive.

Scadal!!! Steve Dallas did day-dreaming black face in the 80s. He should resign from the cast of Bloom County immediately!
