It’s commonly believed that the one-time popularity of the name Fido for dogs came from Lincoln’s dog. There were dogs named Fido before that. The name came from Latin, and means, roughly “I am faithful” The Latin pronunciation would probably be ‘FEE-do,’ as what we call the ‘long i’ sound is an English thing.
So if Fido is the all-time classic dog name, why do we almost never see real dogs named Fido? It probably became so popular that it became cliched, and wore out its welcome.
