    In US law there are serious boundary issues regarding relationships between parties involved in legal cases, including relationships between legal counsels, the judge, and the jury— and sometimes even questions as to the relationship of a witness to the parties subject to the trial.

    That was a response to the old British system used before the revolution—

    In 1670 two Quakers charged with unlawful assembly, William Penn and William Mead, were found not guilty by a jury. The judge then fined the jury for contempt of court for returning a verdict contrary to their own findings of fact and removed them to prison until the fine was paid. (from Wiki)
