Ironically, it’s their rush to condemn Rep Omar that gives credence to her assertion that pro-Israeli lobbyists have too much influence over US elected officials. It’s not just Congress. State legislatures and local officials are getting into the act and demanding government officials not be allowed to support the growing movement to boycott Israeli apartheid.
In this case, senior Democrats responded to the objections of their junior colleagues and acknowledged the need to make sure the resolution was all-encompassing against all bias. The result was that all but 24 Republicans (23 white men and one white woman) voted in favor of it. Yes, it was only symbolic, but sometimes symbols can be helpful.
Every legislator in every government who has accepted money from a corporation or a lobby group will not vote against that $acred cow. This is but the latest example.
Senior Democrats in the Legislature are proving yet another example of why their 20th century religious and political ideologies need to be replaced by 21st century leaders who deserve to lead our country into their future.
