There was a real boy named Sue by the name of Sue K. Hicks. He was present at the Scopes Monkey Trial. The song was also inspired by Jean Shepherd of “A Christmas Story” fame.
My parents thought “a Boy named Sue” was wildly funny when my first girlfriend, back when we were both too young to be really serious would call and ask for “Sue” because se wasn’t old enough for her parents to allow her to call boys.
When Shel Silverstein died, I first learned that he wrote the Unicorn song. I didn’t know about any of his other songs; my thanks for the comments that have added to my knowledge of this wonderfully clever and funny man.

He also wrote the Unicorn song (sung by the Irish Rovers), many of the songs by Bobby Bare, and most of the songs by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.

I have tried many times to find that bar in Gatlinburg but it does not seem to exist. I think they must have paved the street of mud since the fight.

Why do elephants paint their toenails red?
So they can hide in cherry trees.
Ever see an elephant in a cherry tree?
Hide pretty good don’t they.
