From the 1963 Civil Rights “I have a dream” speech in which King dreams of a world where people will be judged on the content of their character rather than the color of their skin, among other things.

Martin Luther King holiday on Monday - celebrating his birth. Curiously, in the church, we observe death days - so the Feast of Martin Luther King is observed in April.

cdward: in the Catholic church, perhaps. We Methodists have no “Feast of MLK” - but offices are closed in observance of his birthday tomorrow.

What gets me is, we have this MLK Day, but all 44 Presidents have to share a day. What this holiday SHOULD be called is “American Civil Rights Day”, or some such, to honor ALL the folks who have contributed to the realization that all Men really ARE created equal… not just one Baptist preacher. Where’s Rosa Parks Day, for example?

PNmom06, I should have said, “In those churches that have feast days.” I’m not Roman Catholic, I’m an Episcopalian, and we also have feast days. Orthodox do, too. Not sure who else.

I was a tourist in the gallery on the day the vote to make King’s birthday a holiday was taken. About 30 minutes before the roll call, many congressmen wandered in, Mrs. King showed up, and the press gallery that had been pretty empty while the southern senator filibustered, also filled up. Made me realize how scripted these big votes are.

OH PLEASE!! The Catholic Faith has Feast days for Canonized Saints, of which Martin Luther King is not. A great man yes, but not a Canonized Saint, for goodness sake!

On that 4th of April (my wedding anniversary) I went out to dinner at the Florentine Room of Italian Village. Many were scared to go out, so the staff was happy to see us and we had a great time. I always considered him a “trouble maker” with his rainbow stuff and I dislike all who try to divide people by promoting single groups (even those that might benefit me like NOW or AARP)- will never be a member!

king was not a trouble maker! the trouble existed long befor he came to the forefront. He preached love , compassion, acceptance of others, unity, faith , brotherhood ,peace, and accented equality. that is the one thing he was adamant about. treat all races as equals. judge people on the content of their character, not on the color of their skin.He would be so disappointed in what the civil rights movement has devolved into.OI’m sure he woild feel betrayed.

    “Dream Big….”

I agree with Dry - Catholic Feast days do NOT include MLK… or President’s Day or Memorial Day or Labor Day or 4th of July…
