Always thought ‘Fore’ was shouted before the shot, so preceding players could avoid the approach shot. Seems like shouting while swinging would reduce concentration of the swinger and pretty much guarantee a bum lie. At least that’s what old films seemed to show.
I used to have an ongoing project to survey a golf course. I’m pretty sure that Fore means something like, “Hey everybody, I nearly got one that time!”
As a lifelong golfer, I’ve always yelled “Fore!” right after hitting a shot if it’s going towards another player or group. In theory, doing so warns them and allows them to try to move out of the way, though they often only have time to take cover behind a tree or golf cart or something. Fortunately, I’ve rarely been in danger of being hit, though I’ve had a few close calls. The “Fore” warning is some nice courtesy, though.
