“The kids got into a fight and destroyed a window. How shall we punish them? Let’s send one to camp and let’s find a way for the other to make money.” Elly and John, your ability to assign punishments to kids is sorely lacking. They are right about one thing though — at age 14 according to Ontario law, Michael is old enough to work.
And back then when this strip first ran, there were plenty of part time jobs for kids during the summer.
Sadly, today many adults and family bread winners are working those low pay fast-food and delivery jobs and struggling to survive, thanks to companies seeking higher profits shipping our better-paying manufacturing work to slave-level-wage nations at the expense of Americans and our middle class economy. Thanks to that plus the rising cost of housing, many people can afford a big flat-screen TV now, but no longer afford a home or even rent an apartment to put it in.
I am in my nineties. I was ten years old and I carried the water bucket for the men on WPA, hand digging ditches for a sewer project. I was 13 and I had my own paper route. At 15 I plowed the fields and hand milked the cows, while dad worked full time plus building tanks for the war effort. Kids and their parents make me sick the way they are today

There you go – give Lizzy house chores and Michael has to go get a part time job or start mowing lawns. Dad could have Michael help him at the Dentist’s office during the summer.

There you go kid. Idle hands are the devils tools. Besides, you’re going to want a car some day soon.

At that age, I used to mow a few yards for a little extra spending money.

Working on summer vacations, that sucks, but it’s also a bit of real life (which also sometimes sucks)
