    3D movies in the 50’s were an attempt to win audiences back from television, which was new and was stealing audiences.

    3D movies also came back in the 70’s and in the 90’s. Neither of those succeeded.

    It seems like the latest wave of 3D movies is going to stay, though. Lots of theaters have invested in the projectors; it’s easier to deliver 3D movies because of digital technology; and some studios have committed to producing 3D versions of many of their movies.

    That’s it – I’m off my soapbox. Let the laughter resume!

    Technology made the difference. In the 50’s they used two projectors and had problems keeping them in sync. Now it’s all digital, no sync issues but I have been in theaters where the left and right images had different brightness.
