Is Hobbes guarding Calvin? Or is the fire too hot? I am sure he is guarding Calvin, so nothing evil can happen to him!

I wonder if this was inspired by “tyger, tyger, burning bright…” Blake would be proud!

No one’s buying your alibi Calvin. Maybe if you hadn’t grabbed a book it could have seemed plausible, but reading a book? Who you trying to kid?

Thank you, thank you, Hobbes! That was a great job of re-creating Calvin’s thoughts. Who would have thought, that after all these years, there was still a way to recall the past?

P.S., I couldn’t agree with you more about the dark side of reality.

i’ve never lived in a house with a real fireplace, but don’t sparks and embers come from burning wet wood? If so, Dad, spend a little bit more next winter and get a couple of ricks of the dry stuff.

Calvin you might find solace in the fact that Hobbes is a fierce advocate for your safety. I wouldn’t be so smug if Hobbes wasn’t around to protect you.

Wood doesn’t have to be wet to make that noise we had a wood stove ages ago and there was no noise. Current house we have a fireplace and poping noise make anyone jump. We have a great in front of ours though sparks does get through and lands on safety fire bricks.

It’s a good thing Hobbes didn’t run through the house setting the curtains on fire!

A few years ago, we had a grass fire in one of our pastures. As the firefighters were putting it out, one of them spotted a squirrel running with its tail on fire. He yelled,

    GET THAT SQUIRREL!

All fire hoses were turned on the squirrel, and put its tail out. It made me wonder how many fires jump fire breaks this way…

Wood with pitch, like pine and cedar, produces lots of lovely pops and snaps – and sparks! Better be careful, Hobbes – I don’t think fuzzy plush friends were treated with fire retardant back then!! ”Calvin and Pile of Ashes” wouldn’t make a very good comic strip…

I had a Mexican chihuahua back before they were teacup size and never permitted to walk but be carried everywhere. We once smelled something burning, or at least scorching, and before we could find the source, she got up with a disgusted expression on her face and body language and lay down again about a foot farther from the fire. Dallas winters are not like Mexico, except maybe some of the higher mountains where few dogs live.

If a teacher received that wonderfully imaginative essay, she/he would know it wasn’t based on actual events. It raises a dilemma that I sometimes dealt with raising a herd of children: if a nearly-three-year-old uses spray paint to letter the alphabet on the white side of a house, and the parent thereby is caught between not wanting to punish the achievement, and needing to deter future paint endeavors, what to do?? (After having to go out to the barn to secretly smile).

Mister Ed, have you heard Squirrel Cop from This American Life? It describes something similar–say halfway between that squirrel in the grass fire to Hobbes here.

Sometimes tigers like Hobbes have to run the CPU through a full attitude check once in a while. The fireplace had nothing to do with it. Calvin understands this phenomenon and takes appropriate precautions…

@spyderred, another dilemma is that teachers are required by law to report all claims of child abuse. Making the obvious judgement call not to report this one could bite the teacher in the bleeep later if some slimy bureaucrat finds out. As a result, today the CPS would be paying a visit to Calvin’s home.
