That sounds more like a human – cat relationship.

Anyway, they have each other.

We all have reasons why we love each other.

They’re ALL alike! But we love them no matter what!

I’m pretty sure that is how my dog feels about our relationship.

This is, in fact, the very reason dog people are dog people; the relationship derives its success from both parties being as sensitive as a fencepost and totally clueless about one another. On the other hand, a recent study has shown that cats actually prefer their human companions to food, and my experience keeping company with six different cats over the course of my life bears it out:

As an owner of three dogs currently, I can tell you that the feelings of love are quite mutual.
