I think my reaction would have been the same as Sally’s here. What on earth would possibly prompt that secretary to ask, if the school-age children who just came into her office, during school hours, are indeed students at this school?!
Do students from other elementary schools routinely wander into this school enough that they have to actually ask this question?!
I wonder about conditions of the Encyclopeadia salesmen having hard time selling the books in this information technology age. Sally’s comparison is priceless!

Tact is not one of Sally’s strong suits.

They got to see the principal, so Sally’s technique sort of worked.

First rule of law: let your lawyer do all the talking and keep your mouth shut.
A closed mouth gathers no foot.

I doubt Sally knows the meaning of the word tact!

If it’s any consolation, Sally, Agnes usually gets sent to the principal’s office for less.

If you want something done right, do it yourself, Linus.

The school should buy some chairs for kids to sit in when they are waiting to see the principal.

Kids today would not know what an encyclopedia is.

We’ll, they’ll get to see the principal alright. Just not in the manner Linus wished for.

Actually, that’s how I might react, too!
