I guess I’m a bit of a dinosaur because I thought that wearing watches and other jewelry wasn’t allowed.
I know the rules have relaxed some but back in the day when I was a soccer referee, FIFA Laws were very clear about players wearing anything but their uniforms.
For obvious safety reasons wristwatches, metal bracelets, rings, etc. were forbidden to be worn. A wedding ring could be tapped over, and earring with uncapped studs had to be removed ( this last one has been changed, since my time ) and only soft casts and well-padded knee-braces were allowed.
These restrictions were to protect the player from injuring himself or another player.
I know that NFL players have lots of protective equipment but a large protruding watch certainly could be a safety hazard.
