Will it even work on the system? I remember when they shut down the first generation mobile network, because there simply weren’t enough of the early phones still in use to make it worth maintaining.

The first cell phones, Motorola I think, were every bit that big, cost $4,000 in 1983 (or a little less than a thousand dollars a pound), the equivalent of $10,000 in 2020 money. And they didn’t work very well. I gather there was a brisk business in fake (dummy) Motorolas, for driving around with, pretending to be rich.
