As I mentioned early in the arc, this is why Reed Richards kept the Thing around, to stall the villain until Mr. Fantastic could get the batteries into the doohickey of the issue. (Except in continued stories. Then it might take two or three issues before Reed could remember which was the +terminal and which the negative… I think polarity was reversed in the Negative Zone.)

The Dr. is a rank amateur, you throw scrappy lad at him which gives you time to make your weapon while he is laughing.
