    Just watch out for the coils which contain the refrigerant chemicals when chiseling the ice off; you’ll have to buy a new fridge.

    I remember doing this as a kid. That’s pretty much what you had to do… the hair drier also worked!

    I killed a fridge doing that once. The chisel went in at an angle, punctured the wall and got a blast of freon in my face.

    Several people I know just stood slack jawed when ask why they would keep a 25+ year old refrigerator that costs way too much in energy every single year to run than getting a new, more efficient, and smaller one after the kids move out? Those worn out appliances that don’t work anywhere near as well or as efficiently can cost you more in utility bills than you’ll spend over a few years on new ones replaced one by one over the years. I thought pluggers were smarter than to flush away money.
