    Living past infancy was about a 50/50 proposition. Then, for women, childbirth was very iffy (for men, hunting and maybe fighting were dangerous). If you made it past “young adult” you became one of the elders, who kept the tribal knowledge, and presumably the intelligence to decide on tough issues. And yeah, 25 was about the tip-over age: By then your oldest kid was probably 10 or 12, plenty old enough to be apprenticing.
